Must be our best ski holiday ever !!We
have had the most incredible time and would recommend it to
anyone. We arrived on Saturday evening after a very
comfortable flight and pleasant transfer to find that there
was plenty of a snow in Poiana Brasov. The hotel was really
nice with lovely spacious rooms and as we were on the first
floor, at the front, with a huge balcony, we had wonderful
views. We found the restaurant and had a lovely dinner served
by very friendly staff and then enjoyed the all-inclusive bar
till midnight.
Next morning we caught the cable car and had a run down the
mountain before going along to ski school. It was snowing by
now so we stayed with the class, had lunch up on the mountain
and then spent the afternoon skiing runs through trees as the
snow was really coming down and visibility was very poor.

We were assigned our own ski instructor
to take us off piste and this really made the holiday. Razvan
Tautu spoke English so well that we didn't realise he was
Romanian!! His cousin lives in England and he spends a couple
of months here every year. Raz took us to places where we
would never have dreamed of going!! We skied black runs in
deep powder, off piste through the forest and even the far
side of the mountain where there were bears and wolves. On
Tuesday it was minus 25 degrees and we had to wait until it
reached minus 18 as the cable car couldn't run at such a low
temperature - the cable might snap!! Raz took us on a route
through the forest, away from the crowds, and we caught the
first gondola up and had the mountain all to ourselves!!
Each day Raz took us to different places that most skiers
would never find and at the end of the week Jonathan received
his level five and the extreme skier award!! He was very proud
to be the first skier called on to the stage at the end of
week party!! |
Raz also took us to some really
interesting places like the traditional Hungarian Restaurant
where all the waitresses wore national costume and it was like
a scene from Hansel and Gretel. Jonathan enjoyed Wild Venison
Goulash but I wasn't quite that adventurous!!
We didn't do the excursions apart from the Bucharest trip (not
enjoyed by anyone) and the end of week party. Kati threw a big
party for all the ski instructors on Wednesday and we were
invited to that - great to meet so many of them and talk about
all sorts of things. We also met the Romanian national ski
team and talked to many of them. It was fantastic watching
them skiing and sometimes we were radioed to move aside whilst
they flew down the mountain!! The fastest is a beautiful young
lady who has skied the mountain in one and a half minutes -
incredible!! |

To sum it all up, lovely hotel serving
great food and drink, perfect weather, lots of powder after
three days of heavy snow, fantastic people and best of all a
wonderful guide to the mountain - Romania had it all for us
and we are already planning to go back again next January.
As an all inclusive holiday, with equipment hire, ski school,
lift pass and even bar in the evenings - it's an incredibly
good value for money way to take a ski holiday !!
Thank you Somerfield !!
