At home Easter
2006 - no, not our usual wet and windy week in Wales, but
Aloha Hawaii, courtesy of a slogan written way back in August.
14 little words flew my husband, daughter and me half way
around the world and into five star luxury at the Hilton
Hawaiian Village on Waikiki Beach.
Unable to really believe it, we stepped off the plane after a
mind-numbingly long flight and entered a different world-a
paradise of tropical gardens, pools and glorious beaches
fringed by palm trees and lapped by warm, crystal clear water.
Our mornings began with breakfast eaten outdoors on a terrace
overlooking the ocean and our days were filled with swimming,
snorkelling and sightseeing.
Part of the prize was a day out to the Hawaiian Cultural
Centre on the other side of the island and the photo was taken
there, just before going onto a traditional barbeque with a
whole pig wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in a pit in the
ground! Very tasty it was too!

Also included were surf lessons for us
all and it is a source of great pride (and even greater
amazement) that I rode a wave all the way to shore-standing
up, I hasten to add! And yes, despite being the second most
elderly (after my husband) I was awarded best surfer in class!
It was by far the best holiday the three of us have ever
shared and we will remember it for the rest of our lives.
So now, when the going gets tough and I seem to be forever
entering and never winning, I will think back to that magical
first night, when barefoot and unbelieving, we walked along
the warm sands of Waikiki Beach and I will send just one more
postcard, fill in just one more entry form. After all I am
proof, that if you persist long enough, something incredible
can really happen!
